I am 17, and hoping to be going on an overseas holiday at the end of the year. I would love to get a Digital SLR camera that is not too difficult to use but has some great settings that allow me to take really good pictures.
I’d like a lot of zoom on it (may have to get a larger lens)
Preferable a canon or nikon as they are supposedly the best

Any advice on buying or using a digital SLR camera would be greatly appreciated too.
Thanks

I want to buy a digital SLR camera in the near future. I’ve used one before, but all I have is a point-and-shoot. I’m a student, not a professional, and I don’t need the best camera on the market by any means. What is a good, affordable brand or model for a "first SLR"?

Another thing is that if I cannot afford a brand new camera, I might look into buying a used one. Would you advise against this? If not, what is a good place to get a nice used, camera?

I’m not exactly the artistic type and I don’t have any expensive photographic equipment. However, I’ve been thinking about getting into photography as a hobby – using a digital camera, not film. I currently have a 5.0 MP camera with a 3x optical zoom. I’ve played around a bit with the various features and learned how to take decent pictures in various conditions. And I do have a decent tripod.

I guess one of my main questions is whether I should immediately try to buy a digital SLR camera or if the one I have would be adequate to start.

And once I am taking pictures, are there specific subjects or concepts I should focus on. Or is it more just getting out there and taking pictures?

I’ve always loved photography and have used a Canon Rebel (film) camera before, but am just now beginning to truly study it in depth and understand more about this art. What would be a good (and hopefully relatively cheap) digital slr camera to start off with?
Thanks in advance :]

I love photography & taking many pictures and also editing them on computer software. I only have had digital point-and-shoot cameras, the quality of the pictures are really bad. I really want to upgrade and experience using a Digital SLR camera. I don’t really know much about them, and was wondering what a good beginner one would be? Im only 16 so my budget is kind of tight so I would be looking for something on the cheaper side. Could anyone recommend something & where to buy it.
Thanks :D

I recently got a Digital SLR camera (Canon Rebel XT) and my dad has several good lenses for an older film-based SLR camera. The lenses are different in the fact that the old ones have 3 "blade" type metal pieces at the bottom instead of the relatively flat new lens. Is there something I can get to use the old lenses on my new camera? I really want to use that lens
Thanks guys, will do a little more research and see if there is an adapter available.

I recently used my Nikon D40x digital slr camera to take some photos of the full moon with a 200mm telephoto. After that experience, I am interested in purchasing a telescope that I can use along with my Nikon D40x to take even better photos of the moon and other night sky bodies. Can anyone recommend a good telescope that would be good for this purpose. I would prefer to spend well under 00 for any telescope and gear. Thanks.

I am trying to get into a good school for communications, and I found the school that I really want to get into. The problem is that they expect us to own a digital SLR camera for one eight week class.

I got online and comparison shopped, and found out that I can’t get anything that has the lens for less than 0! I’ll only be using it eight weeks! I’m not a photographer, and I’m horrible at taking pictures. Yes, I’ve used a DSLR, and it didn’t help…but I need one for this class. So, I have a few questions:

First, and I know it sounds like I’m trying to "cheat my way out", but I’m not. Can they really tell if I’m using an SLR camera as opposed to one of the point and shoots with retractable lens? If so, is it the megapixel difference how they can tell? If they can’t tell, does anyone have any good advice for a comparable comparison?

And, if not (to the last question), does anyone know of a decent site that I may have missed that has the camera cheaper? Whatever I get, I’m stuck with, and can’t return it (I don’t know how to sell things online…and don’t have time to try to figure it out…if I can’t find a buyer in the paper, I’m stuck).

Yes, I know I’m stubborn, and I’ll be accused of being cheap, but the point is that as important as my education is (this is a really high ranking school), keeping food in my daughter’s stomach, a roof over her head, and heat in our home is the ultimate goal here. Plus, I have a lot of dental work to get done this year because I’m in agony here. I just don’t have that sort of money to spend.

Yes, I know I sound bitter…and I guess I am. Just fed up with the fact that even "Christian" schools act like you’re dirt if you put your child’s needs above their financial gain. :(
Kayley: I will check into it, but I doubt the school I’m considering has rental programs. It’s an online college.

Pfotoace: I’m not going for mass communications, but rather communications with a focus in writing/English communications. It’s a 2 yr. program, and only one photography class. The other course just uses software to edit the pictures I took in the first class.

She Ta: That’s too expensive…a camera, no matter how "good" should not cost twice as much as a car payment, and I really don’t see any quality difference, as long as it’s not one of those keychain digitals.
mjt004: Thanks for the links. I hate to admit it, but I was banned from EBay because a "friend" of mine stole my account password and used it to sell products he didn’t own…he received payment and never sent products or sent shoddy junk. So, now I can’t use EBay, even though they claim they believed me that it wasn’t me who did it (the shipping address came from his home). They banned me as a way of making the ripped off buyers happy.

I’ve just got my first digital SLR camera. It’s a Nikon D40. But I don’t just want to use the ‘auto’ settings. What would be the point of that! I want to learn how to use all the manual settings and all that stuff. I am a total beginner. How can I learn about digital SLR photography? Should I enroll in a course? Get a training DVD?

so, im an artist and i need a camera to take pics with then sketch so i can put together a good portfolio for my senior year. im only a high school junior with a need for a good but cheap, reliable digital SLR camera. i don’t care if it is used. any suggestions? websites?
thanks!
